Warning about ATO Scams

As the Tax season begins the ATO has given notice of an increase in ATO related scams. Scams aim trick you into paying money or giving out your personal information.

The ATO has released the following information to help the general public identify scams. Most notably that the ATO will no longer use hyperlinks in outbound unsolicited SMS. This will help the community to identify legitimate ATO messages and spot ATO impersonation scams.

You can view the ATO’s complete article here.

Other advice to stay scam free includes:

  • always access ATO online services by typing my.gov.au or ato.gov.au into an internet browser
  • never share your sign in details for ATO services with anyone
  • don’t give out your TFN, date of birth or bank details unless you trust the person you are dealing with, and they genuinely require these details.

You can report a potential scam to the ATO here.
